Provides extension education and research programs in natural resources for livestock ranchers and managers of private or public range and forest land. Emphasizing on oak woodlands and water quality management. The livestock and natural resources program is responsible for providing information and programmatic leadership to Madera and Fresno County clientele in promoting sound management and sustainability of natural resources and livestock enterprises. Madera and Fresno Counties contain large areas of annual grassland and hardwood rangeland, which are almost all privately owned. There are also large areas of conifer forestland that are mostly publicly owned and managed either by the USDA Forest Service or USDI National Park Service. In general, the counties are characterized as one-third forested land, one-third rangeland and one-third agricultural land with urbanization encroaching on both agricultural land and rangeland. Key issues identified through a comprehensive needs assessment were rangeland water quality, hardwood rangeland management and public land management.
